a bit thrifty…

One of the things I like best about (natural) dyeing and eco printing on fabrics is that you can make a unique garment out of something old. This linen blouse  for instance  cost me practically nothing, but with some euca leaves, a tin can and a bit of iron water it became something new. I was a bit lazey with the scouring and mordanting this time. I only let it soak for about a week in soy milk and washing soda. I left the bundle for a few days outside and washed and  rinsed it immediately after opening. Much of the grey was washed out, but I like these faded colours anyway…

Last time I wrote about my adventure with avocado skins and showed you my cotton blouse that I dyed with it. At the same time I dyed a silk scarf that I bound off Shibori style. The result was a bit boring, so yesteray I tried to add some interest by giving it an eco print detail in the areas that I had not taken the dye. I picked some cotinus leaves, dipped them in ironwater and put them on. The rusty tin that I rolled it in gave it the greys. The leaves gave off some of their own colour and in part acted as resists, so that you only see their outline.

dyeing with avocado skins

Finally I had eaten enough avocados ( the dark ones and thank you neighbours for helping me), so that I could dye this cotton blouse that I bought for very little money in our local church thrift shop. After a good hot cycle  in the machine, scouring with soda ash and mordanting it with aluminium acetate, I presoaked it for a couple of days in water with soy milk and washing soda. Then prepared the dye bath by letting the cut and presoaked avocado skins simmer for about an hour. I ombre dyed the shirt by lifting  it from the dyebath little by little, so that I got a nice gradation in colour depth.

loose weave

Most of the time you take for granted that everything is going well: your loved ones are in good health, kids doing fine at school etc. It is only when you hear of someone in your family who is not so lucky that you realize your good fortune. My second woven scarf has traveled to Limburg, to my sister-in-law, to let her know we think of her. I used thick and thin cotton and linen yarns, which resulted in a very loose weave.

pigeon hole

This is what I made for Judith, my receiving partner in the Peace Felt 2012 activity. For the idea and tutorial I am greatly indebted to Corinna Nitschmann, whose online felting course I was honoured to attend some time ago. As you can see the Peace Felt pigeon has just delivered the olive branche and in the course of doing so lost a feather..hope it won’t need it anymore:) So Judith, your pigeon(hole) will soar on its wings to you on Thursday and I hope you will enjoy it..I will put the feather and the twig inside for you to assemble.

weaving on a harp!?

Last winter I saw this video series  from knitpicks.com on the internet and was inspired to try my hand at weaving. I did not have the time then however to put my plan into action, but last week my Kromski Rigid Heddle Loom that I ordered from Das Wollschaf arrived. Thanks to Tim from New Voyager Trading I put it together quite easily. I had more difficulty with preparing the warp, mixing up back and front beam, crying out for more hands when rolling it up ( how do you hold on to the loose warp ends, hold the brown paper between the yarn threads and roll the beams at the same time?..I struggled a bit). I used a plain wool sock yarn as the warp and used an Austermann woolen yarn in graded colours as the weft. This way I could make the best of the colours. Then I set myself in the garden with the loom on the tabel and in my lap and within two sunny afternoons I finished my first woven scarf. Not bad, hey?

printing with plants

For the last couple of weeks I have been experimenting with eco print on silk and cotton. I found my inspiration in books (India Flint, Jenny Dean) and on the internet in the weblogs of some very creative people in this field. If you are interested in dyeing with natural dyes and ecoprinting I recommend to have a peek in the following weblogs and websites: Red2White, Threadborne, Wild Colours and Gaia’s Echo, where you will find numerous links to other experts. Eco printing requires a lot of patience. First you have to acquire the fabrics in their natural colour, then scour and mordant with presctibed chemicals), which especially with cotton takes several days in between mordant baths and giving the chemicals time to set. Then you have to find the right plant materials that promise good results. I even bought my own eucalyptus that I planted in a huge pot so that I can take it in when temperatures fall below -15 Centigrade. I will trim it into a shurb and use the cut off leaves and stems for printing and dyeing as soon as it has started to grow (in fact, I spotted a couple of tiny new leaves yesterday, so I’m hopeful ( fingers crossed). Then the bundles were boiled and steamed and then the most difficult part: wait a couple of days before opening. I could not wait for more than a week, so I still have a long way to go. Some leave their bundles in the compost heap or on a sunny spot in their gardens for months! One piece of silk chiffon I post mordanted with iron water, and then the magic happened: yellows turned green and blues to purples: this way chemistry is fun:) I just had enough fabric to make this peasant blouse, for which I found a tutorial on the internet. Because of the size of the fabric I had to make a few adaptations that actually make it look more interesting. The other fabrics are on their way to become a tunic or to be used as scarves or for another purpose in due time. To be continued…

resist dyed vest

This slideshow requires JavaScript.

It has been a long time time since I was here for the last time. Due to unforseen circumstances my job took so much of my energy that there was very little time for creativity. Now that the summer holidays have nearly come to an end, I realize that to to be creative my mind should be completely at rest. I tend to take my duties too seriously and even when I’m done, I will fret about what I could do more, better etc. No wonder my body also protested with all that tension built up inside. My arthritis even kept me from attending the Heidi Greb workshop in Baard in the fall, and you may know that I was so happy that she would be teaching in the Netherlands, so that was a great disappointment.

Of course I could not do nothing, so I played with free form crochet, did some knitting, experimented with shibori dyeing, learnt  how to dye cotton with Procion MX , made a nuno jacket that is still waiting for some final touches and made myself this vest. I used several kitchen utensils and other findlings and dyed it twice with Landscape Dye. It is rather difficult to get the resists in on such a large piece of felt. Because I did not have two identical resists of each, I tried putting aluminum foil at the back. In this way you don’t get clearcut shapes, but who that does not worry me in this case.  I also used a piece of rusty iron, which left a darker print because it worked as an iron aftermordant.

portred..

For our dear art teacher A. we all made our own customized portrait of her as a farewell gift. There were marvellous pieces of home made art work: she probably never suspected so much creativity in her non- art- teacher- colleagues! I made a flat felt piece in matching colours for her hair, eyes and always meticulously done red lips and then made incisions in her paper portrait in several areas where the felt would peek through. I added another piece of the same paper at the back, so that the felt would be sandwiched in between.

She is in her red period and asked me to make her a scarf for the cold winter months. I cut out the shapes from a double layer in the prefelt phase, cut off about one inch on all sides, and added loads of short wool threads to connect them back to the base.  I sandwiched ( do I smell a theme here?) the threads in between the two prefelts. After felting the whole bundle I threw it into the dyepot.

The booklet is another one in my series of resist dyed pieces. Could colour preference be addictive? It will be a present: hope the recipient will love red too!

felt united

It seems like ages ago that I wrote a post here. Our summer holidays had to be cancelled because my father-in-law passed away. Just before we were about to leave for our trip to Scotland, his health deteriorated so quickly that we did not dare take the risk that we would have to come home from abroad. So we made  the right decision and stayed at home. We were also busy installing both our sons in their own abodes, one of them just a mile away from us, and the other one up north. We have become experts in assembling flat packs from our Swedish friend by now.  After that a family reunion that our branch of the family had to organise  this year, help our brother move house and settle  into his new home ( the time is ripe for him to give up living on his own, now that his mental health condition is slowly getting worse) and now you will understand why there was little time and room in my head for felting.

With the International Day of Felt coming near, I was happy to receive the commission of making a red shawl or scarf for a dear ex- colleague. She can’t have known that her choice of colour would blend in so nicely with this year’s colour theme in the Felt United gettogether. I made three so that she has a choice and used some leftover fabric to make a necklace for myself.
