Some of these projects were started at, some inspired by the felting workshop at Irene van der Wolf”s. The vessel I dyed with onion skins in accordance with the onion shape; for the darker lines I used linen fibres. The brooch was made in a new technique that Irene will tell about in her new book, which is still in the making. She is so innovative in her felting and so patient and inobtrusive in her teaching, that I am not amazed she was asked to teach in the United States next year: so if you are in for some non-conformistic feltmaking: check out Chris White’s website next summer, because she is the one that invited Irene in the first place. For the seascape I have to thank Marja, who made a fantastic wall hanging : a piece that was one of the highlights of the course. I simply couldn’t resist the temptation to make one with the same theme, too.

De vijfdaagse viltcursus bij Irene werkt nog na: in de afgelopen weken heb ik enkele dingen afgemaakt die ik daar begonnen was. Ook de nieuwe techniken die we van Irene heben geleerd en de wederzijdse inspiratie werkt nog na, merk ik. De uienpot heb ik met uienschillen geverfd, om binnen het thema te blijven. De “broche”  is gemaakt in een nieuwe techniek die Irene in haar volgende boek ( haar derde alweer) zal opnemen. En aan de muur van mijn werkkamertje hangt nu het zeegezicht, dat Marja zeker zal herkennen. Haar wandkleed was een van de hoogtepunten van de cursus en ik kon de aandrang om dezelfde techniek en hetzelfde thema te gebruiken niet weerstaan.

nuno vest revisited..

I participated in a  holidays felting workshop at Irene van der Wolf. After five days of continuous felting at a stretch, you feel that you have  muscles you hadn’t known the existence of, so the term holidays felting course is somewhat beside the point… Irene is a great tutor: she gives you a free hand at what you would like to do, but also shows you new techniques to try out for yourself. If you want to do the stuff you had planned, that’s fine. She stimulates to experiment and to this purpose she has a whole range of materials available. She also has a great way of making you realize  how your work reflects your character and the way you interact with circumstances and people around you. Some of the participants made a coat with needle felt as a base with several inlays and embellishments. This inspired me to make this nuno vest; I scored a piece of fabric for one euro at our local market and used the pattern as a guideline for the rest of the inlays. Though I thought I had the measurements right, it shrunk more than I had anticipated and instead of a coat dress I now have a vest: I still have to think out what kind of closure to put on: maybe I’ll do without and let it fall open…. Many of my projects have an open end; some way or another I don’t seem to know what way to go at a certain stage. Best thing to probably is to let it lie for a while and pick it up later to see what it tells me to do.

Ik heb vorige week weer de vakantiecursus bij Irene van der Wolf gevolgd. Na deze vijf dagen zit je hoofd vol van nieuwe ideeën en tegelijkertijd zegt het lichaam dat je even pas op de plaats moet maken. Irene heeft altijd wel weer nieuwe technieken die we kunnen uitproberen, maar als je je eigen weg wilt gaan is dat ook prima. Ze geeft je alle vrijheid om te experimenteren en heeft daartoe ook heel veel materialen in haar atelier op voorraad. Een eyeopener voor mij was weer dat je werk, al dan niet “gelukt”,  vaak wat zegt over je karakter of hoe je met je eigen situatie en de mensen om je heen omgaat. Dit kan een enorme bevrijding zijn, die je weer verder helpt in wat je doet. Een aantal van de cursisten hebben een jas gemaakt. Dit heeft mij geinspireerd tot het maken van een vest. Eigenlijk zou het een overslagjurk moeten worden, maar hij is toch meer gekrompen dan ik verwachtte. Ik ben nog aan het dubben of ik een sluiting moet maken of dat ik hem zo open laat vallen. Ik merk dat het leggen van de laatste hand bij mij problemen geeft. Misschien moet ik hem even weghangen en komt de “oplossing” vanzelf. Het stofje heb ik voor één euro op de markt gescoord: het patroon ervan was het uitgangspunt bij het leggen van de rest van de decoraties.

red, yellow and blue

Actually I should say ” blue, yellow and red”, because that is the consecutive order in which I (over)dyed a piece of natural felt from which I made felt covers for two notebooks, both on commission. I could not take pictures of the first one, because it had to be ready by yesterday evening and lighting conditions are not that good to make nice pics, so I will make up with this one. I buy simple notebooks with spiral backs and replace the covers with felt that I dye and embellish with embroidery and/or beads. I usually make a crochet trim, because that is sturdier than blanket stitch, I think. This time I used three colours and chose smaller resists every time I overdyed it. In this way you get most colours and beautiful shades, which the pictures can’t do full credit.

Ik heb dit keer een stuk vilt in drie verschillende kleuren geverfd en daarbij steeds met kleinere voorwerpen afgedekt, zodat je veel verschillende kleuren krijgt. Het grootste deel van de lap heb ik gisteren voor een groter notitieblok gebruikt, maar die moest ik gisteravond nog snel afmaken en toen was het te donker om goede foto’s te maken. Vanmorgen kreeg ik een telefoontje of ik er nog een wilde maken en gelukkig had ik nog genoeg over voor deze. De stevige kaften haal ik er af ( je kunt ze er gewoon afschuiven) en die kaft gebruik ik dan als mal voor de vorm en het maken van de gaatjes met de leertang.  De randjes zijn gehaakt, met een dunne haaknaald kun je vrij simpel door het vilt prikken. Niet je vingers erachter houden als je flink doorduwt: mijn linker wijsvinger heeft nu ook een gaatje:0

can you resist resist dyeing?

When I first saw the work of Chad Alice Hagen on the internet, I knew for sure that if I ever would learn to dye wool and felt myself,  resist dyeing would be one of my first projects. Now that I have the equipment, I had to try it out myself. I bought some kitchen utensils with various holes in them in the local thrift store, clamped these onto a piece of natural coloured felt and a kitchen tile. Of course you have to cover the back of the felt as well, otherwise the dye will penetrate from behind and you won’t get a pattern. ( thanks for the tip, Han!) I first dyed it in blue, then removed the resists, tiles and everything and overdyed in yellow. Today I gave a  simple notebook an individual outlook with this cover. I used the leather punch to make the holes for the spiral and the crochet trim.

Toen ik het werk van Chad Alice Hagen op internet ontdekt, wist ik gelijk dat ik dit ook wilde leren. Toen ik dus alle materialen had om vilt en wol te verven en van mijn koudwatervrees was bevrijd dankzij Linda Dezijn en mijn medecursisten, kon ik het niet langer uitstellen. In de kringloopwinkel kocht ik wat oud keukengerei met allerel gaatjes en ik klemde die op een gevilte lap (naturel). Aan de achterkant dekte ik die af met overgebleven wandtegels uit de keuken. Zo zou de verf niet van achteren in het vilt dringen en zo de afdruk onzichtbaar maken ( dank je voor de tip, Han!). Dit pakje verfde ik eerst met blauw. Daarna verwijderde ik alles en verfde de lapjes nog een keer met geel. Een simpel notitieboekje heb ik vandaag een metamorfose gegeven. De kaften heb ik verwijderd en vervangen door twee stukken vilt die ik heb versierd met borduurwerk en kralen. Nog een slot erop en nu heb ik een boekje om nieuwe ideeen in op te schrijven. Voor de gaatjes gebruikte ik de leertang die ik vorig jaar bij Irene van de Wolf heb gekocht. Over ruim een week ga ik  weer vijf dagen in haar atelier “rommelen” : wordt vast weer hartstikke leuk!

ladybird arrived today!

Look what landed on my doormat today: my ladybird-in the grass-with-the -blue-sky-above bracelet. Ruth of Birdland Creations made it for my size ( large) and taste (rather outspoken) after several emails and making sure it would be completely as I had envisaged it to be. In Dutch there is a saying that the customer is king, but Ruth takes that even further:) and here it is, even sooner than I had expected. It is absolutely beautiful and I am sure I will wear it a lot: it is different, colourful and the silver clay ladybird is so sweet. I was so lucky to find her website on Red2White‘s blog roll. If you’re searching for a group of people who inspire each other to take their art a step further, have a look there: so inspiring!

Kijk eens wat er vandaag op mijn deurmat is geland: deze armband, helemaal naar mijn wensen gemaakt door Ruth van Birdland Creations. Na intensief emailverkeer is hij helemaal op mijn lijf ( c.q. pols) en persoonlijke voorkeuren gemaakt; kleurig, apart en het lieveheersbeestje van zilver klei is zo schattig! Ik vond haar website in de bloglijst van Monika van Red2White. Deze  kunstenaars werken van tijd tot tijd aan een gezamenlijk thema: daardoor inspireren ze niet alleen elkaar en helpen zo hun kunst naar een hoger niveau, maar ook voor degenen die hun ervaringen op hun weblogs volgen is er veel te leren en te bewonderen.

fish net wrap

This time of the school year is always hectic: now that our school is going through a very thorough renovation it is even more hectic than usual. It’s also the time of welcoming new colleagues and saying goodbye to those that will be leaving us. For a very dear colleague I made this wrap: my first fish net felt scarf ever. I used the finest merino, handspun Swifter wool yarn and silk roving and after the felting process I dyed it in a mixture of blue and black Landscape Dye. It’s very light and drapes beautifully and could even be worn on a cool summer’s evening.

Het schooljaar is bijna ten einde. Omdat de school gerenoveerd wordt terwijl we in het gebouw blijven, zijn er geregeld interne verhuizingen van lessen en materialen nodig. In de zomer is het hoofdgebouw aan de beurt. Het zal nog wel een jaar duren, voordat dit klaar is. Dit brengt nog meer chaos en hectiek met zich mee dan normaal voor de zomervakantie het geval is. Het is ook de tijd dat we nieuwe collega’s verwelkomen en van sommige afscheid moeten nemen. Voor een lieve collega heb ik deze visnet sjaal gemaakt. Ik had nog wat zelfgesponnen Swifter wol en heb die met de zachtste merino en zijde gecombineerd. Daarna is hij geverfd met Landscape Dyes in een mengsel van blauw en zwart. Hij is superlicht en valt heel mooi en is zo ook geschikt om op een koele zomeravond te dragen.

to dye for…..

Sorry I kept you al waiting so long, but my job kept me pretty busy and I had a lot of knitting to finish first. I had a lot of work adding new stuff to my school website: making mp3 recordings for my pupils, that will make it easier to learn all those tricky Latin words, I hope. I also recorded the Dutch translation of the Latin texts that my students in 6th Grade will have to plough through next year. For copyright’s sake I uploaded these to our LMS, so you won’t be able to hear my sweet voice 🙂 meandering through those long sentences, which is a pity:). But now that this is  done and the vacation is on our doorstep, my mind is becoming more and more relaxed, weather is fine, so I went outside to do some dyeing. I found a mini electrical stove at our local thrift shop ( 3,50 euros, which is a steal). Last week my felting neighbour friend surpised me with a huge dye pot that she scored there too ( good for you Audrey! and thanks again for this welcome gift).

I first dyed over the yarn that didn’t take the blue dye evenly, because it had to “swim” in a much too small pot. Now in my new one I gave it another soak with green. I am very happy with the result; actually I have already cast on for a cardigan and will happily knit away in the holidays.

That same day I felted a wrap with silk and merino roving and dyed it in blue and clematis ( Landscape Dyes). It is almost therapeutic for me, because you can’t control the outcome and have tot let the wool and the dye decide how it will turn out. That takes a lot of  “letting go”, which I find very difficult.

Het spijt me dat jullie zo lang hebben moeten wachten op een nieuwe post. Ik had het druk met mijn werk en heb bovendien allerlei nieuw materiaal op mijn schoolwebsite gezet. Zo heb ik een microfoon aangeschaft om audio fragmenten te maken van woordenlijsten en teksten, zodat de leerlingen die op hun computer kunnen afspelen of zelfs op hun mp3 speler, als ze dat handig vinden. De examenklas van volgend jaar moet pittige Latijnse teksten lezen en nu kunnen ze vanuit de ELO de vertaling afspelen, terwijl ze het Latijn in het boek meelezen. Het is weer een experimentje..ik hoop dat ze het handig vinden.

Over experimenten gesproken. Deze week heb ik mijn nieuwe verfpan en het elektrische comfoortje ( beide van het Vincentrum) buiten neergezet en heb het garen dat ik al geverfd had en dat niet naar mijn zin was nogmaals geverfd, nu niet met blauw maar met groen. Ik ben heel tevreden over het resultaat: ik heb het garen zelfs al op de pennen  om er een vest van te maken.

Dezelfde dag heb ik een omslagdoek/sjaal gefilt van merino en zijde en deze heb ik met sky en clematis ( Landscape Dyes) geverfd. Met dit weer droogt de wol als een tierelier, dat is nog een extra voordeel. Het zelf verven van de wol en de zijde is voor mij echt therapeutisch. Je kunt nooit helemaal sturen hoe het wordt en daarom is “loslaten”  belangrijk; iets wat ik nog wel eens lastig vind.

into patchwork these days

Our neighbour Tom fixed my flat bicycle tyre: he didn’t want to have anything for it and  instead I made something for his wife, so indirectly he benefits from it , too. :))She loves warm colours and I had some silk chiffon fabric scraps. With some leftovers from my nuno felt dress and other bits and pieces ( silk roving, locks etc) I pieced those  all together with fine merino roving in one very thin layer. The result is a very light fabric that has much texture and  a beautiful drape. Tom’s wife was very happy with it, because she likes to have something around the neck as I do . (What is this neckpiece thing with women our age, I wonder).

Yesterday was our last of five workshops with Linda Dezijn. This time I made a tunic with sandwich technique, all in natural colours. The ponge that I had basted into pleats beforehand, did not felt as well as I had hoped. It is a dense variety and the merino fibres  don’t migrate easily through one layer, let alone two. I used all sorts of silks ( chiffon, ponge, throwster’s waste, organza) and tried to make texture with prefelted cords and felt nuggets. I dyed it with Landscape Dyes, clematis. The different silks and wool densities give a lot of variety in the colour: which I like!

 

 

Mijn buurman was zo lief om mijn fietsband te plakken. Hij wilde er niets voor hebben, maar vond het wel goed dat ik iets voor zijn vrouw zou maken. Daar heeft hij ook nog profijt van, natuurlijk:) De restjes van de zijde chiffon van de jurk heb ik gecombineerd met andere zijde chiffon resten. Tussendoor heb ik nog losse zijde, draadjes en lokken gelegd, allemaal in haar favoriete kleuren, dus ze was er helemaal blij mee. Nog een vrouw die graag wat om haar nek draagt: hebben alle vrouwen op onze leeftijd een pijnlijke nek, tegenwoordig?

Gisteren was de laatste van vijf workshops bij Linda Dezijn. Ik heb een tuniek gemaakt in dezelfde techniek als de jurk, maar nu alles in wit, zowel de zijdes als de wol. Thuis heb ik hem ‘s avonds nog geverfd met Landscape Dyes, clematis. Ik heb met stof, viltkoorden en doorgevilte viltstukjes veel textuur verkregen. De pongee is lastig in te vilten als je hem ook nog in plooien rijgt, zoals ik heb gedaan: daar ben ik nog niet zo tevreden over. Misschien moet ik een nog dunnere pongee gebruiken in het vervolg.

felt necklaces

I like to think out new ways to make necklaces. Since it’s not the season for shawls and scarves and I like to wear something around my neck: could it be a fetish?:) These two I made this week. In the green one I incorporated silk fabric scraps and threads. For the purple one I made a prefelt shape first in several layers and colours. Underneath the upper layer I put silk threads. When the prefelt had dried, I stitched  vertical lines like rays with the machine. Then I cut into the spaces in between, making sure not to cut the bottom layer of merino.  I tied in some buttons and marbles to get some texture and interest at the sides. I also machine stitched the contours and cut off the excess prefelt. Then I fulled the “bib” . To achieve a perfect fit I made a short extra cord so that the necklace lies nice and snug.

Ik vind het leuk om nieuwe manieren te bedenken om halssieraden van vilt te maken. Deze twee zijn deze week ontstaan. Voor de groene heb ik stukjes zijde stof en zijde draadjes meegevilt. Voor de paarse heb ik eerst een vorm in voorvilt gemaakt: meerdere lagen in verschillende kleuren merino op elkaar en onder de bovenste laag een laagje zijde draadjes. Toen het droog was, heb ik de contourlijnen en de verticale lijnen met de machine gestikt. Tussen deze “stralen” heb ik de bovenste lagen van het voorvilt opengeknipt. Nu het gevold is,  zie je de onderliggende kleuren en zijdedraadjes nog steeds. De shibori bolletjes zijn ontstaan door knikkers en knopen in het voorvilt af te binden. Na het vollen verwijder je die weer, maar omdat de vorm in de wol blijft krijg je prachtige texturen.

dress(ed to kill..)

Last time I attended Linda Dezijn’s felting workshop she showed us her felt dress that she had made in nuno felt technique: it was simply gorgeous. We were all very much inspired to try something like this ourselves. My problem was that it would take four weeks before we would be there for the next time and I can’t wait that long. I have to go with the momentum of  inspiration. So next time I had the house to myself I made the template ( which is HUGE) and made the dress that same day. I had a large piece of silk chiffon fabric that I used for one side of the “felt sandwich” and pieces of the same fabric, silk roving and  silk chiffon pieces in coordinating colours for the right side . There is only one layer of wool roving in turquoise and aqua in between. The silk pongee that I had also used didn’t felt that well, so I decided to rip that off. This looked even better, so that was an unexpected welcome gift. Now I have a  problem, because I will  have to think of another garment to make at the next workshop:) 

Tijdens de vorige workshop bij Linda Dezijn liet ze ons haar nuno vilt jurk zien: werkelijk prachtig! Iedereen was zeer geinspireerd om de volgende les ook zoiets te maken. Voor mij is het vier weken wachten voordat je eraan kunt beginnen een crime, dus de eerste de beste dag dat ik het huis voor mezelf had, heb ik het sjabloon (GIGANTISCH) getekend en geknipt en meteen de jurk gemaakt. Ik had nog een grote lap zijde chiffon die ik voor de binnenkant van de “sandwich” heb gebruikt. Wat er nog over was heb ik met andere bijpassende kleuren aangevuld voor de buitenkant. Ertussen één laagje turquoise en aqua merino  voor de verbinding. Ik had ook nog stroken zelfgeverfde pongee opgelegd, maar die waren niet goed vastgevilt, dus die heb ik eraf getrokken. Het resultaat werd er zelfs mooier van, dus dat was een gelukje. Nu heb ik een probleem, want nu moet ik iets nieuws bedenken voor de volgende keer dat we bij Linda aan de slag gaan.:)
